Hurricane Milton, on Wednesday, dropped from category 4 to 3, with maximum winds of 120 miles per hour (195 km), following its path from the west coast of Florida, where the first tornadoes are reported.
However, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Milton has increased in size and wind intensity, with tropical storm strength extending more than 255 miles (400 km) across. Expected to arrive tonight.
The system is located 60 miles (100 km) west-southwest of Sarasota on the west coast of Florida, and 170 miles (275 km) southwest of Orlando in the state center, and it heads northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 km).
NHC meteorologists warn of the possibility of tornadoes in various areas of Florida, and report strong winds that are hitting the peninsula.
It is predicted that between Thursday and Friday, Milton will turn east-northeast, and its center will touch the land tonight on the west coast of Florida. Then, by Thursday morning, have finished crossing the peninsula and head for the Atlantic.
Meteorologists warn of the danger that the hurricane continues to pose, especially when it reaches dry land and crosses the peninsula.
The heavy rains that it caused pose a “risk of catastrophic flash and urban flooding”, especially in the most common coastal and land-based flood areas.
Hurricane Milton will be “catastrophic and deadly,” US Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warned that this could be the “worst” hurricane to hit Florida in a century.
The population is warned to evacuate as quickly as possible to ensure their safety.
